If I just bought a house, How do I amend my taxes to get the first time home buyers tax credit?

Someone told me to go to irs.gov or whatever and print out a form? is that all I do and just mail it in?
I understand I can do it next year, but wanted to amend it now.
Yes, I definitly want the money now, so I am going to amend the 2008. Since I did taxes on turbo tax, can I amend no there?

  1. Common Sense says:

No. When you file your 2009 taxes that’s when you claim it.

You take care of that when you file your 2009 taxes next spring. It is part of the tax form/built into any tax software you can use. You’ll get the credit along with your refund, or if you owe taxes, they will deduct your tax payment and send you the remainder of the credit.

You either wait and file for it with your 2009 tax return (attach IRS Form 5405) or you submit an amended 2008 tax return (IRS Form 1040X) along with the Form 5405.

  4. tro says:

if you purchased the house prior to the deadline Nov. 30, you file your 2009 1040 and form 5405 for the $8000 credit
a new credit was passed Nov. 6 which relaxed the prior ownership rule for a lesser credit
