Finding Your Dream Home
December 31st, 2009
Pete starts with you. That’s a statement that you will have to remember throughout your search for your dream home. The reason is because throughout your journey of finding your dream home, you will find yourself being derailed one time too many. Everyone will want to give you advice on where is the best location, who’s the better realtor, who is better contractor, etc. so, remember, it’s YOUR dream home. When in doubt, refer to yourself. Better yet, browse through magazines and newspapers and cut out pictures of homes that you like, areas that you fancy and paste it into a special ‘My dream home project’ book. This way, you can’t go wrong.
The first thing to do is to determine the area where you want to get a house in. Your dream home should not be too far away from your work place, schools, family members, etc…unless you want it to be, of course. Get a real estate agent to help you buy the house off the original owner. Some websites actually allow you to key in an area code and they will give you a whole list of houses on sale in that area. If your dream house is listed, you’re in luck. They will assign a realtor to work with you on buying your dream home.
The next step towards buying your dream home is, of course, financing. If you have the cash, you can buy your dream home instantly. Nobody rejects cash! Well, unless the original owner wishes to keep the home because of sentimental reasons. If you’re like the rest of us, you may not have enough money to buy your dream home in cash. So, start researching on an affordable and most viable home loan.
The process between signing the agreement to getting the loan to having the keys to your dream home is a long way. This is a good time for you to find a contractor to design and construct your dream home for you. The best way to find a suitable contractor to design your dream home is to ask around – there’s nothing quite like referrals. Referrals mean they are satisfied with the services that have been provided by the contractor.
Designing and constructing your dream home is both a painful and pleasurable experience! I mean, you’re literally designing a home that you hope to live in for a couple of years, maybe even for a lifetime! It’s exciting as you watch every single inch of the house transform from an empty hollow shell into the home of your dreams! The artistic input from the designer, your own personal preferences all combine together – and viola! You have a dream home to live in.
This is also the time to discuss the inside of your home – would you like it to be cozy or clean and organized? Is there any particular style preference you think you should tell your designer/contractor? Your dream home should be consistent in all areas of the home – but they can have different characteristics. For example, exotic Asian look for the bedroom, French home look in the kitchen and the fun, jovial and cheery look for the kids’ bedrooms.
The most important thing to consider is the comfort level and practicality of your dream home.
Withdrawing Emotionally From Your Home
December 31st, 2009
Pete One of the hardest steps in home selling is emotional withdrawal. I don’t mean the numbness that descends after you’ve been spending two weeks solid de-cluttering, packing and organizing, I mean making your home into a sterile, personality-less collection of wood and mortar instead of the home that you have lived in for years. It can be very difficult to say goodbye to a family home and sometimes the pain of loss can sneak up and surprise you. This can block you from effectively staging your home to sell and from enjoying a positive outlook on your new home. The first step is to pack away everything from your home that personalizes it – pictures of family, graduation diplomas, knick knacks that are more personal than decorative, toys, etc. You may even want to go so far as to remove artwork that has a special meaning. Stage the home with some generic artwork instead, perhaps. Leave decorative items that accentuate the space, like vases of flowers and some good, uncontroversial sculptures (now is not the time to show off your replica of the Venus de Milo) and a number of books, enough to fill shelves, but not so much that the shelves are overflowing.Understandably, children might not understand right away why you are doing this. Explain that they can decorate their new rooms, but for now they need to keep only a few toys that will be packed away in a basket or box when showings are scheduled. Perhaps (if they are old enough) giving them a job to do that involves them with the home staging will help.Fixing and repainting are another good way to disassociate yourself emotionally from your home. A neutral palette is best, as this will allow buyers to envision themselves in the home more easily. And, while the dent in the living room wall brings back your memories of when Junior ran his tricycle into it one Christmas, it will be a negative mark in the eyes of potential buyers and an obstacle to your letting go. Fix the places that have been marked in some way by your family’s life and paint over where Sally drew a horse on the wall of her bedroom. Use this time to focus your thoughts positively on your new home. It’s okay to mourn the loss of your old home, but put limits on it so it does not destroy your enjoyment of your new home. As you pack away your family possessions, think about where you are going to put them in your new home and how you are going to decorate your new living space. Encourage children to plan out their new bedrooms. It can be very emotionally wrenching to part with a family home. Ruthlessly packing away family treasures, fixing damaged or marked up areas and focusing your thoughts on your new home are strategies that will not only help you sell your old home, but prepare your mind and heart to bond with the new.

Boot Camp for New Dads offer advice to keep your baby safe around the holidays
DATELINE: Irvine, CA …
One of the most important concepts to teach new parents is how to provide a safe environment and keep baby safe. The holidays are busy and is more difficult than ever to keep baby out of danger of suffocation and other dangers.
Greg Bishop, founder of Boot Camp for New Dads and author of two parenting books, shares tips from his second book, Crash Course for new dads – Tools, Checklists and Cheat Sheets "to keep your baby safe around the holidays:
Toxins. Fix the house before the holidays? Give yourself a manicure before going to the party? Paints and lacquers, including nail polish remover and not be used near its baby. An infant's immune system is not fully developed, and these substances can be harmful even in small doses.
Smoking. Even if you and your spouse can not smoke, visiting relatives, can not have a problem with the lighting around your baby. Unlike you, your baby can not get out of danger. Ask to visit the smokers to consider outside or garage, away from your baby's lungs.
Pockets.'s Always happy with a house full of family and friends at parties. But with so many people moving, sitting and standing – be aware that things can get out of the pockets of his guests without anybody noticing. You can grab a small object and have it in your mouth before you know it. Even the ingestion of a single currency would require your baby to go through surgery. Stay aware and not be afraid to ask your guests to empty their pockets before holding your baby.
Salt and honey. Despite not knowing the rules of salt and feed your baby honey, family and friends do not. Although you can not keep soda out of baby food, excessive salt is harmful to your kidneys and blood pressure. And, until his baby turns one year old honey, newborns should NEVER be fed. Honey can cause infant botulism, which could lead to death. Make sure family and that having no knowledge of the rules do not allow your baby has even a morsel of food without consulting you first leave.
Decorations. Holiday decorations are a feast for the eyes. Unfortunately, they are also a choking hazard to infants and children small that they can find small pieces and put them in the mouth. When decorating your home, the "use of slide and hide" technique. Take a toilet paper tube and use it as a measuring device. If an object can slide down the tube, you can glide through the breathing passage your baby. Put those trimmings not pass this test away until your baby is much greater. And, of course, keep an eye on your baby when they visit their relatives or friends with older children who may have decorations and small toys around your house.
